We all have been told at least once in our lives, “Make sure you take your vitamins“. I know I have been told multiple times and it was not until recently that I finally started to listen.
Instead of taking a daily vitamin tablet like most people do, (and I am not suggesting that taking an actual vitamin is bad) I try to get my vitamins from whole natural foods. What better way to get your daily dose of vitamins than from nutritious whole foods? With that being said, I started a list of Vitamins that I wanted to make sure I was getting daily. The first on my list was Vitamin C! Why you may ask? I hold Vitamin C as a top vitamin because it is a powerful antioxidant that helps maintain connective tissues, blood vessels, bones, and skin- making it an important vitamin to consume.
Vitamin C can also help prevent heart disease and helps lower bad cholesterol (LDL). Recent studies say Vitamin C can help protect you from many types of cancers by fighting free radicals that enter the body. According to Dr. Sears, Vitamin C helps you to better absorb iron, promotes wound healing, and boosts your immune system. He recommends that adults and teens get at least 60 mg per day of Vitamin C.
As I mentioned earlier, getting Vitamin C from food consumption is the best way to absorb it- but taking vitamins is also recommended. If you want to try to get Vitamin C from your food, I came up with a list below of essentials.
Here is a list of the best foods to eat for Vitamin C:
- Red peppers
