Controlling inflammation is now a focus of preventing and treating certain diseases. Taking pills is one way to control inflammation, but you can also learn skills to protect your family from excess inflammation by what you eat and how you live.

Here are 7 Ways to Keep the Body in Inflammatory-Balance by Dr. Sears:

1.) Reduce your Waist. Stay Lean. You may think excess fat is harmless, but these fat cells are chemical factories pumping out pro-inflammatory substances into the blood stream. The fewer the fat cells, the less inflammation.

2.) Change your oils. Omega-3 oils, especially those found in fresh cold-water fish such as salmon, trout, and herring, are the most effective anti-inflammatory foods you can eat. These healthy oils help to protect all the tissues in your body from damage, especially your blood vessels. Avoid partially hydrogenated oils and trans-fats.

3.) Feed your family healing foods instead of hurting foods. Healing foods contain nutrients that promote growth, strengthen the immune system, and repair damaged tissues. Here are examples of healing foods: eggs, fruits, nut butters, lean meats, seafood, tofu, vegetables, whole grains, and yogurt.

4.) Stabilize your insulin. The two best ways to stabilize your insulin levels are to eat healthy carbs and to graze on frequent mini-meals rather than to gorge on big meals. Junk carbs promote inflammation. Large meals are hard for your gut to digest and to manage.

5.) Move! Exercise regulates the inflammatory response. It stabilizes insulin, burns fat, and allows the body to produce it’s own inflammatory medicines. Try to exercise at least 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week.

6.) Spice up your eating. Eat more herbs and spices such as: turmeric, ginger, cilantro, oregano, rosemary, and thyme, and pungent foods like onions, garlic, and chili peppers.

7.) Stay Calm. Easier said than done. Although, new insights show that the nervous system and immune system, interact with one another when stress is in the body. Stress produce cortisol in the body, and when there is too much cortisol, the body is sent into a pro-inflammatory state that hurts you rather than heals you.
